The Mondragon Inspiration
Mondragon started in 1956 in a small Basque town in Spain. Today it is one of the world's best-known cooperative groups. At Garay Cooperative Network, we want to bring this model to San Diego.
A proven cooperative model, built by workers for their community
His Story / Su historia
Father José María Arizmendiarrieta (1915–1976)

José María Arizmendiarrieta was born on April 22, 1915, on a farm in Markina-Xemein, Biscay. In February 1941 the newly ordained Catholic priest, then 26, was sent to Arrasate-Mondragón, an industrial town still suffering from poverty and unemployment after the Spanish Civil War.
He believed that working people could only move forward through education and their own work. In 1943 he opened a vocational school, paid for by donations from the townspeople, so that the children of every worker could study and not just a few apprentices. Some of his first students went on to become engineers while still working full time.
In 1955, five of those graduates (Usatorre, Larrañaga, Gorroñogoitia, Ormaetxea and Ortubay) left secure jobs to start a company run by its workers. On April 14, 1956, Arizmendiarrieta blessed the founding of ULGOR, the first industrial cooperative of what would become Mondragon. He then helped create Caja Laboral (today Laboral Kutxa), a cooperative bank that opened its first office in 1959 to finance new cooperatives and keep local savings working locally, along with Lagun Aro, a social welfare entity for cooperative members.
He lived simply on a curate's small salary, rode a bicycle like the workers, never took payment from the cooperatives he helped start, and refused any formal position. He died in Mondragón on November 29, 1976. In 2015, Pope Francis declared him "Venerable."
"Knowledge must be socialized in order to democratize power." (Arizmendiarrieta)
(Arizmendiarrieta)
Mondragon is a group of cooperatives that work together instead of standing alone. They share ownership, democratic governance and long-term investment in their communities.
According to MONDRAGON's official website:
- 81 separate, self-governing cooperatives
- About 70,000 people
- 12 R&D centers
- 104 production plants in 37 countries, with sales in more than 150 countries
- Four areas: Finance, Industry, Retail and Knowledge, including Laboral Kutxa, Eroski and Mondragon University
- The largest business group in the Basque Country
Mondragon has also had hard times. When its appliance maker Fagor Electrodomésticos went bankrupt in 2013, the other cooperatives worked to relocate the affected members. That shared support is part of the model.
- Unas 70.000 personas
- 12 centros de I+D
- Cuatro áreas: Finanzas, Industria, Distribución y Conocimiento, incluidas Laboral Kutxa, Eroski y Mondragon Unibertsitatea

Why it matters for San Diego / Por qué importa para San Diego
Mondragon shows that a community can own the businesses, schools and financial tools that shape its future. It began the way Arizmendiarrieta did: with education first, then enterprise.
Garay Cooperative Network wants to bring this model to San Diego. "Just as Father Arizmendiarrieta's students founded Mondragon's first cooperative, I see our students starting the cooperatives here." - David Sandoval
We are building it around six connected cooperative pillars:
- Education & Learning Hubs
- Nutrition & Food Security
- Renewable Energy
- Affordable Housing
- Mining & Fabrication
- Robotics & Artificial Intelligence
Like Mondragon, the pillars are meant to support one another as one connected ecosystem built for long-term resilience and shared prosperity. We adapt these principles to serve California's Qualified Opportunity Zones, building locally owned systems for energy, food security, education, housing and workforce development.
