Cooperative Leadership 101: Your Family’s Gateway to Ethical Teams That Reach the Stars

For Cadet Alejandro and Principal Laura Salgado – Because SAHD Families Deserve Courses Built for the Future

Dear Cadet Alejandro and Mrs. Salgado,

Imagine a high-school cadet and his mom sitting at the kitchen table, scrolling through course options, and suddenly finding one that doesn’t just check a box—it lights up the entire vision of Starfleet Academy Homeschool Division.

That course is Cooperative Leadership 101: Foundations in Cooperative Models and Ethical Leadership. It’s rolling enrollment, self-paced, dual-credit eligible, and 100% designed with SAHD cadets like Alejandro in mind.

Here’s why this class feels like it was written for your family.

The Heart of the Course: Mondragon + Real-World Ethics

You’ll start with the inspiring story of José María Arizmendiarrieta (JMA), the priest-teacher who built the Mondragon Corporation in Spain—one of the world’s most successful worker-owned cooperatives. Through readings like Reflections by JMA and Making Mondragon by Whyte & Whyte, Alejandro will explore the 10 Principles of Cooperation and how they power everything from factories to global robotics initiatives.

Then comes the philosophical depth that makes SAHD special. Using Virgil Lorenzo’s groundbreaking dissertation (Toward Cooperative Ethics: A Ricoeurian Reading of the Educational Aim of Jose Maria Arizmendiarrieta, open-access link included in the course), you’ll compare JMA’s educational vision with Paul Ricoeur’s idea of “living the good life with and for others in just institutions.” It’s not abstract philosophy—it’s a framework for building ethical systems that actually work on Earth and in space.

The Starfleet Spotlight: MARS Curriculum

This is the part we know Alejandro will geek out over (and Mrs. Salgado will love for its forward-thinking design). The course dives straight into SAHD’s MARS model—Men/women And Robot in Space ethical work teams. MARS isn’t about robots replacing humans. It’s the opposite. It imagines infinite combinations of human astronauts and humanoid robots working side-by-side as true extensions of human capability.

Robots handle the dangerous, repetitive, or precision tasks so humans stay focused on creativity, leadership, ethics, and the big-picture decisions that only people can make. In the online modules Alejandro will learn how MARS teams apply Mondragon’s cooperative principles to lunar and Martian missions. Then, in the optional one-month Moonbase Simulation practicum (Minecraft/Discord/Zoom-based, scheduled when slots open at Vandenberg’s flagship site or future network locations), he’ll live it. Small crews of 5–8 cadets will establish a sustainable moonbase, face resource crises, allocate tasks, and practice governance—always asking: “How do we keep humans central while letting robots amplify what we can do?” It’s hands-on leadership training that turns abstract ethics into real teamwork. And because the practicum can be taken before, during, or after the online modules, it fits perfectly around Alejandro’s homeschool schedule.

Built for SAHD Families

  • Flexible pacing — Start today, finish in weeks or stretch it out. No fixed semesters.

  • Dual credit — 3 units that count toward AA/AS in Urban Studies and SAHD’s exploratory leadership pathway.

  • Moonbase pipeline — This course is the on-ramp to the full SAHD vision: 800 Moonbase Sim sites nationwide serving 1 million U.S. youth in Qualified Opportunity Zones, powered by “canyon” solar farms that also create local jobs and housing.

  • Degree ladder — Finish this intro, then step into the two-semester practicum for the bachelor’s level, the “Honeymoon on Moonbase” internship for master’s couples, or the full lunar internship for PhD Mars prep.

Why This Matters to You

Cadet Alejandro, you’re already training to be part of humanity’s multi-planetary future. Cooperative Leadership 101 gives you the ethical toolkit and the hands-on MARS experience to lead teams where humans and robots thrive together—never one replacing the other. Mrs. Salgado, as principal you’ve built SAHD around innovative, cooperative leadership in exploratory contexts. This course is your partnership with Southwestern College made real—delivered in the exact flexible, high-impact format SAHD families need.

Ready to begin?

The online modules are open 24/7 on Canvas. Alejandro can start the first unit this weekend, earn credits toward his AA/AS, and schedule his Moonbase Sim whenever the next Vandenberg cohort opens. Click “Enroll” today and watch your cadet step into the role he was born for: ethical leader of human-robot teams that will one day settle the stars.

To the stars—together,

Dr. Elena Vasquez & the SAHD–Southwestern College Team

P.S. Mrs. Salgado, if you’d like to preview the MARS module or Lorenzo dissertation excerpt before Alejandro dives in, just reply—I’ll send them straight over. We built this for families exactly like yours.
